Knott Rigg - Ard Crags

5 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Jenny Smith

Report by Jenny Smith

Twelve of us set off today so three cars were nicely filled.  We had a nice walk, despite cloud cover and some drizzle when we were walking along the ridge.  Fortunately the wind was behind us as we walked eastwards towards lovely views  of  Causey Pike and Blencathra, with Cross Fell on the horizon and the Helvellyn range closer in again and, of course the Newlands valley to our right

The walk up was hard work,  but the views and the walk the along the crest of the main ridge is so rewarding that despite the even steeper descent,  all felt it was worth doing.  We had a good crack and lots of laughs as usual, another grand Wednesday walk.

An absolutely beautiful evening for a walk and ten of us set off from Crosby on Eden along the Hadrian’s Wall path. We had three overseas visitors who have been coming along on Thursday for the past few weeks, Laurie and Christine from Canberra in Australia and Ron from Queensland in Australia. We left the wall path and headed across some rather muddy fields and it was more or less like that all the way to Scaleby Castle. It’s a lovely little castle with lovely gardens and we had a good wander round before the owner came out and informed us that it was private property and  viewing was by appointment only. We apologised for the intrusion and set off on the return leg of our walk.   We crossed more fields and at one point were accompanied by a herd of curious cows (bovine variety) but they kept their distance. We arrived back in perfect time to head off to the Near Boot for dinner.
Our Australian visitors are all heading back home this week, thank you for coming along and perhaps we will see you again one day. A big welcome back to Christine, walking again after a three month layoff due to injury. All in all a lovely evening, great company,
many thanks to everyone who came along.
