Eighteen of us met up in the inclement weather at Bowness, and briefly looked around the village before catching the bus to Port Carlisle. The tide was rushing in behind the old coal wharf as we reached the dock and we wandered east then south to the Watchtower and Glasson Moss. Useful information boards explain the formation of lowland raised peat and measures being taken to restore them from the damage caused by peat cutting. Sadly the views were limited though the rain had stopped. We had better views from our vantage point at Rogersceugh where we lunched. There were few bird sightings but, on cue, skeins of geese joined up and flew overhead as we arrived at the main hide at RSPB Campfield. We then looked around the visitor centre at North Plain and especially noted the 7000 year old bog oak recently recovered from the common. The viaduct gave us a great viewpoint out on the solway before arriving at Pear Tree farm for tea and cake just as the rain started again.
So, a new walk for many with lots of interest, and well supported
