Pillar from Wasdale

11 Miles Grade 1

Leader: Pete Rutland

Report & Photos by Pete Rutland

A long drive down to Wasdale so we didn’t get started till gone 10.30. The route to Black Sail is a good stretch so gives plenty of time to warm up before the very arduous ascent of Pillar. It goes on for a bit but we were rewarded with magnificent views which for my money are not beaten anywhere in the Lakes. It was1pm by the time we hit the summit shelter for a well earned lunch.

It was then on to Scoat Fell and Steeple. Apart from a slight threat of hailstone and sometimes a bit windy the weather remained good and clear all day giving us far ranging panoramics throughout the day. By the time we headed off down Red Pike I’m not sure if my little joke of doing Yewbarrow was well received but the group remained in good cheer.

Still a long walk back to the cars from the foot of Yewbarrow resulted in a 6pm finish in the car park.

Thoughts of afternoon tea and buns were a distant memory.

I can’t thank the guys who turned up for this walk enough, its a tough one. If you are feeling the pain this morning you can also be a little a bit smug in the knowledge  that after this theres no walk on the programme you can’t tackle.

Superb views all day in an awesome landscape, hope you enjoyed it.
