Carlisle & District Rambling & Fellwalking Club

Walk & Event Reports

Seventeen of us set out from the car park at the corner of Castle Wood
(that's fifteen more than we expected when we looked out of the window
at 8  o'clock!).  While it did rain for a time at the start, it soon
stopped, blue sky appeared and Criffel's summit steadily cleared of
cloud, although its English cousin Skiddaw never appeared.

Despite the numbers lost to avian flu, there were many small flocks of
barnacle geese and a few pink-footed, always a pleasure to see, and the
calls of curlew added to the atmosphere.  Some of the paths were very
wet, there being nowhere for all the rain to drain to, but no-one
drowned!  After all the flat ground, the climb up Ward Law felt more
than its 96 metres, but the views at lunch made it worth the effort.

Many thanks to you all for venturing north and making my first walk as
leader for a while so easy, to Anne, my co-leader for back marking so
capably and for organising the the teas at the WWT cafe, which I think
we all greatly enjoyed, and to Tamara for retrieving my forgotten jacket!
