Twenty-four walkers arrived in Langholm on a rather damp morning to enjoy the bluebell woods. We set off south through the park following the River Esk as far as the Skipper's Bridge. Then we began the gentle climb up to the cemetery surrounded by bluebells. We viewed the former fever hospital now a house and then crossed the fields to reach the path through the Kernigal Wood. Some of us did hear a distant cuckoo as we reached the magnificent old oak tree known as the King of the Kernigal. His Queen blew down some years ago and she was reckoned to be nearly two hundred years old. We then followed narrow paths crisscrossing the Hungry Burn and bluebells were everywhere. We had lunch in sunshine towards the end of Gaskell's Walk and then went by Becks Burn, crossing down through Holmwood to the elegant Duchess Bridge. With Fred at the front we "raced" up the track towards Potholm to view a vista of bluebells which stretched as far as the eye could see. After that the group split in two to return to the Buccleuch Centre for well earned refreshments. Thanks to all who came for their good company and to the stars of the show, the bluebells.
