Carlisle & District Rambling & Fellwalking Club
Walk & Event Reports
Four of us took the train from Carlisle to Sanquhar on the Glasgow line. It was a cloudy start but soon turned into a fine and sunny day. From the train station, we took a quiet road out of the town and crossed the River Nith. A short way from the bridge, we turned onto the Southern Upland Way, picking wild raspberries from the hedgerow as we went before turning off into the woods to follow Euchan Water, a tributary of the Nith. The woods were the remnants of an ancient oak forest filled with wild flowers and mossy tree trunks. We took a break on one of the many benches along the trail, sitting above the river gorge, in the peace and quiet. When we left the forest we joined a very quiet minor road back to Sanquhar where we had coffee and cakes in the café adjoining the information centre before returning to Carlisle on the train.
