It is very rare for a group such as ours,  exploring the Lake District and environs for the most part over a period of many years,  to come across a new valley and a new approach to hills we all know.  We were guided by David and his two hyper-active dogs,  and in the party today were a young lady from Whitehaven called Dianne and a rare sighting of the greater stubbled Fred who unfortunately had a dodgy knee,  although he managed the walk with no problem.  Dianne said that ours was the fastest group she had ever walked with (out of politeness she did not add “despite an average age of 97”).  Apart from David,  none of us was familiar with the village of Little Langdale,  Little Langdale Tarn,  Slaters Bridge and several other very beautiful features.  The weather was lovely,  the start of the walk fairly easy,  but up what was called an “intake wall” (anyone any idea why?) and onto Birks Fell it started to get steep.  The climb up onto Wetherlam was very steep but really enjoyable,  involving as it does,  quite a few easy scrambles up very sound rock.  The views were stunning.  Levers Water,  Coniston,  Windermere,  Morecambe Bay,  the Langdales,  the Scafells and Great Gable plus just about every other fell in the Lake District.  On the top it was a bit breezy,  but by and large we were walking in lovely sunshine on clearly marked paths.  The pub in Little Langdale provided a full range of refreshments including tea,  coffee and excellent cakes and scones.
A wonderful,  memorable walk,  many thanks to David for exploring the area and working out such a superb  round.
