B Walk

Gelt Woods-Castle Carrock

10.3 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Stephen Parker

Report & Photos by John McKay

What a wonderful walk we had today. Eight of us set off from Low Gelt car park and made our way through the beautiful Gelt Woods, it was a perfect day for walking, nice and warm and dry. We set a good pace and were soon passing through the lovely little hamlet of Greenwell where we stopped to admire several wood piles. It would seem the residents of Greenwell take great pride in their wood piles, very decorative and artistic. We soon found ourselves in Castle Carrock way ahead of schedule and decided we would add a few miles to the walk by going off round the reservoir. This turned out to be an excellent decision. We had lunch on the hillside overlooking the reservoir and then made our way back into Castle Carrock where we stopped for refreshments at the village pub, The Duke of Cumberland. We then headed off and picked up our original route and set off through some lovely woods and past the “Bee Eaters” sand quarry and back to the cars. Off to Hayton Farm Shop for some wonderful refreshments. 10.3 miles, a very respectable walk.  A fantastic day and some strange topics of conversation, the world cup of course, England in the semi finals, what could be more strange than that, some I couldn’t possibly tell you about, much as I would love to. Some that were very educational, who needs Google when you have so many well informed club members. Did you know that to wash your hands properly you should do it for quite a length of time, a quick dip under the tap and a little bit of soap is no good at all, as a rule of thumb, in the time taken to wash them properly you should be able to sing two verses of Happy Birthday. Not a lot of people know that, as Michael Cain once said. A wonderful day, many thanks to Stephen for leading and to all the others for their company.
