This was the walk that had a bit of everything and a lot of some things.  6 of us set off by car from the Sands heading for Whinlatter Forest,  through the Western end of the woods and up the very steep slope to the ridge that heads onto Ladyside Pike.  All along here there were two other “lots of” – this time it was snow and sunshine.  Wonderful day,  stupendous views over almost the whole Lake District  After the Pike,  we had another lots of ice on the slope up to Hobcarton.  We had crampons,  except for Kathi,  so she was roped up to me after casually remarking that if she fell she would drag me with her and we would both have a nasty ending!  Cheery thought,  but on a more serious level,  we could not climb directly upwards across the rocks,  so traversed sideways onto the Whiteside Ridge.  From there it was more conventional footpaths up to the summit for lunch,  and thence to Grisedale Pike,  down the ridge and back to the forest.  Here we did meet another lots of – unfortunately we hit part of the forest that is being chopped down and had no alternative but to plough through deep mud where one idiotic member among us managed to overbalance and fall into very deep mud!  (All the clothes are now in the washing machine and I hope they will be ready for wearing next Sunday.)  Too late,  sadly,  for tea and scones but a wonderful walk – one that those on it will never forget.
