Lonscale Fell and Latrigg (9 miles/2000 feet of ascent)

8 of us ventured forth from Booth’s car park, joining Jim at Briar Rigg who had parked his car nearby.  A fairly steep climb along the Cumbria Way brought us out at the car park at the top of the lane from Underscar Manor.  A gentle stroll then ensued following the 350m contour along the lower slopes of Lonscale Fell, before turning due north for several miles towards Skiddaw House.

We did a hairpin turn at the fence half a kilometre from Skiddaw House to follow the Burnt Horse Ridge.  We were then faced with a very steep climb along the ridge to reach Lonscale Crags, climbing 100m very quickly before deciding to stop for lunch.  By now the mist had descended and thankfully following the fence kept us on track.  A small deviation was required to reach the summit of Lonscale Fell before descending towards Whit Beck.  The path was indistinct and Bruce’s mobile App kept us on the right side of the ravine to eventually meet the path down from Little Man.

None of us were keen on repetition so we took in Latrigg on the way down and successfully negotiated the forest above Forge Brow to emerge at the Calvert Trust Horse Riding Centre and back into Keswick for well earned refreshments.  It was suggested we could repeat the walk in the Summer (perhaps taking in another summit) and hopefully get better views than we did this time.  Thanks to everybody who came on the walk.
