Another cracking day with 12 souls getting out there and testing their gear out. Heading up through Whinlatter Forest it was obvious that on the open fell side it was going to be a bit breezy. As we came out of the shelter of the trees approaching the short climb to the top of Lords Seat it was also obvious we had slightly underestimated the wind. So much so that a few stayed in the shelter of the trees (this decision having some merit) whilst a few linked arms and struggled onto Lords Seat in a very haphazard way, looking like a bunch of drunks as we went backwards, forwards, sideways and eventually up hill and down again. Venturing any further on the open ground to Broom Fell was a none starter so it was back to the visitor centre for a 12pm lunch.
After Lunch we went back into Braithwaite, parked up and not to be totally defeated set off on a low level assault of the countryside. We went to Swinside, Stair and back under Barrow and into the Cafe at Braithwaite. A walk that turned out pretty well, didn’t get wet and only the odd gust of wind to contend with. At least it gave us the 8 miles we should have done. Thanks to the bunch who came out and saw the sense of having to change the walk which is always a bit of a disappointment, better luck next time.
