A Walk

Ennerdale to Buttermere

9 Miles Grade 1

There is always the odd occasion when no matter what plans are made,  the odd thing goes wrong.  While the A and B parties made it in reasonable time to their setting off points,  because the bus was restricted in the roads it could use, the C party were unable to set off from Buttermere village till 12noon.  I mention this even though it is not part of the A party walk description,  because it does create some problems which need to be considered.  The possibility of simply not going to Buttermere by bus is not really a good one – fine for A and B parties,  but it would basically stop the C parties from visiting the most beautiful part of the Lake District.  A possible way forward is for all three walks to start and finish at the village,  or at least en route (eg. Lanthwaite Green).
The A party walk was as beautiful a walk as we ever get.  We started with 16 walking clockwise round Ennerdale Lake from the weir where the river Ehen flows out of the lake, to Bowness Knott.  We went to the left of the Knott,  where two of the party left us to head for Floutern Tarn,  and the rest headed up the very steep slope, alongside the delightful stream called Rake Beck,  past the wolf trap (restored in the last few years – does someone know something we don’t?) and onto the summit of Great Borne.  Lunch here,  then along the ridge to Starling Dodd and onto Red Pike.  The next thing to go wrong was on the descent where 3 members of the party somehow fell behind and lost sight of the rest of us – apologies for that,  but glad you all made it o.k.  A group of us went to see the waterfall (cf. the photos) and while not in spate,  it is always spectacular.  From there it was a straightforward walk back to the village with tea,  scones,  ice creams and – most crucially – toilets.  Lovely to have Steve and Eleanor with us on the walk – their first with the group for about a year -  and thanks to all who came.
