A/B Walk

Horton in Ribblesdale

10 Miles Grade 2/3

Leader: Graham Bell

Report & Photos by

Ian Rowley

Thanks to Graham for leading this combined A/B walk of around 10 miles. Definitely not a day for climbing any of the Three Peaks and judging by the dearth of any other walkers possibly a day for not venturing out at all.  Still, nine walkers braved the elements on a round walk linking together several local sections of long distance paths including the Pennine Way; Ribble Way; Pennine Bridleway and the Dales Highway. I think there may have been wetter days in club history but this was definitely in the top ten percent. Water began seeping into my right sock after about ten minutes and the dampness had spread to most parts of my body by the time we took a hurried lunch break, trying to get some shelter behind a dry stone wall. At Selside we turned the corner of the walk to face directly into the wind driven rain, an experience that at times was something like walking through a car wash.

As we approached the last couple of miles the rain began to ease though all the surrounding hills remained shrouded in heavy mist.

Faced by an unfriendly welcome at the local pub (judging by the comments on Trip Advisor this is a common experience) the bus was taken to Ingleton in time for welcome refreshments.
