A Walk

Skiddaw

Leader: Ian Rowley

Report & Photos by Ian Rowley

Eight walkers took up the challenge of taking on Skiddaw via its back door, beginning with an easy approach across farm fields and a short climb on the track up to dash falls. From this point on the walk became a seriously steep climb firstly on to Bakestall then climbing again in two stages to get to the top of Skiddaw, a distance of close to 6 miles and the best part of 3000 ft. of ascent from the starting point. Warmer clothing was required on the top of the fell with much cooler temperatures and the usual strong wind.

After lunch, taken a little way down the lee side of the summit, the rest of the walk was a pleasant descent in warm sunshine, made more interesting by a close up view of gliders being launched from Latrigg. We paused for a short while to observe close up a very scary looking take – off. As the caterpillar remarked to a passing butterfly: “you’ll never get me up in one of those things”

Thanks to my seven fellow walkers for a fine walk.
