A good turnout for the coach today with 14 joining the “a” party including several very welcome new faces. The walk up the Greenside road and on towards Keppel Cove was made in warm sunshine with an impressively icy looking Catstycam filling the view for most of the way up. If anything the weather improved as we climbed the steep zig-zaged path with impressive views of the glaciated bowl of Keppel Cove and the top of Helvellyn also clearing. However any hope of a clear summit for our walk quickly vanished and the wind chill factor on both White Side and Raise meant there was little incentive to linger. Descending to Sticks Pass allowed frozen fingers to recover but we had to descend further to find a suitable lunch spot. Reaching the higher levels of Greenside mine the group split with the majority continuing over Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd and a smaller group enjoying a more leisurely return to Glenridding. A first taste of a true winter mountain day for 2019 made all the more enjoyable by the company.
