A Walk

Skelwith Bridge to Coniston

Leader: Ian Rowley

Report & Photos by Ian Rowley

On a day well suited to waterfalls and ghylls this improvised walk took in several of the lake-district’s finest water features. Some hidden from view at the bottom of deep ravines others showing impressively the force of water combined with gravity. Plenty of chances also to peer into quarries, caves and mine entrances and wonder at the amount of labour, mostly worked by hand, needed to remove countless tons of slate and minerals. Eight walkers set off with a leader who had a fair idea of where he wanted to be but occasionally struggled to find the right path (or any path at all).

Still, a fine day without getting to the top of any significant peaks and whilst not always dry underfoot a day when waterproofs were needed only rarely. Thanks to all seven intrepid A walkers,
