Walk & Event Reports

Seven of us set out today from Wasdale Head quickly picking up the long steep path up Kirk Fell. A continuous upward path for 1 and a quarter miles. Stopping to take in  the views as we increased in height, or was it just an excuse to rest and catch our breath. The weather was fine if a bit hazy and looking over to Gable the summit was as almost ever, covered in a lump of cloud. After one and three quarter hours of uphill struggle eventually we were rewarded with a long rest and dinner on the summit of Kirk Fell. What was even better was the weather brightened, Gable and the Scafells cleared and the rest of the day was glorious.

After lunch we headed off toward Great Gable. It was downhill before again trecking back up the rugged path that would take us to the top of Great Gable. Another 800ft of ascent was probably not that welcomed by any of us but we were rewarded by some amazing scenery from the top. After another long rest it was down to Styhead and the stretcher box where some could not resist investigating the said contents. Allegedly looking for hidden Mars bars but someone suggested there were pain killing drugs somewhere therein and it was more likely this was the intended substance being hunted. This proving not to be true we headed off for the long march back to Wasdale Head.

Once there it was drinks in the Wasdale Head, still in glorious sunshine. A cracking if very tough 7 miles, with ascent well in excess of climbing Scafell Pike. Thanks to those who pitched up to give it a bash. Rewarding if crippling.
