B Walk

Borrowdale Valleys from Rosthwaite

 Leader: Ian Rowley

Report & Photos by Ian Rowley

11 “B” walkers set out on a fine day that followed hard on the heels of storm Eric. At times it felt like spring was just around the corner and with bright sunshine and clear skies Borrowdale and later in the walk Derwentwater looked a real picture.  Several caves were peered into before we found Millican Dalton’s abode and the leisurely pace and detours due to flooded footpaths meant lunch was taken a little later than planned. The walk passed over Ashness Bridge then along the winding rocky path up to Watendlath. The final climb over and down to Rosthwaite revealed dramatic clouds with rays of sunshine picking out the fields and farms – again another picture to savour. With a dearth of cafes available post walk refreshments were taken in the Riverside bar of the Scafell hotel in Rosthwaite village. The wall of the bar features the honours board for the annual Borrowdale fell race, a route that takes in Scafell Pike, Gable and Dale head and in total is 17 miles long with a little over 7000 feet of ascent -

now there’s an A walk to contemplate.

Thanks to everyone for turning out.
