Walk & Event Reports

Here is a ramble I took yesterday It starts and finishes at the 67 bus stop on Brisco Road.

Under four miles, River Caldew Circular. Grade 4.

From the bus stop on Brisco Road, cross over, bear right, then take the first left onto Lamb Street. Cross Scalegate Road at the end of the street and turn right then, after a few yards, left into Hammond's Ponds. Take the perimeter path through the park, past the ponds until you reach the car park. Turn left over the foot bridge and follow the path through the woods, bearing right to the exit onto Durdar Road. Cross over and continue up the hill for a couple of hundred yards to Lowry Street. Turn right onto Lowry Street, follow it to the end and onto a private gravelled road. This becomes tarmacked and swings right going downhill. Look for a kissing gate on your left, go through and down the hill to a short and low tunnel under the railway. After passing through the tunnel there is a pasture with a path by the right-hand hedge, you can see a footbridge in the distance. Just before you reach the bridge turn left on a well-defined although narrow path along the Caldew. This is part of the Cumbrian Way. Continue along here past the weir to the steps up to the road. The last 20ft of the path here has been swept away by the river so to get to the steps continue as though you are going to through the five bar gate but when you reach it you will be able to see a narrow path along the fence line where you can climb over on to the steps near the top. This is not difficult as the steps are practically level with the little path.

Turn right and continue up the ramp and over the rail bridge. When you reach the road turn right, past the car park and right again (there is a finger post showing 'Durdar Road 3/4') Follow the path downhill past the children's play park, keep going downhill towards the railway until the end of the greensward and through a small gap in the fence. This takes you through some rough land, where the path splits take the right-hand fork to a kissing gate. This now follows Wire Mire Beck until you reach a flight of steps up to the road. When you reach the road if you look across slightly to your left you will see the gates to Hammond's Ponds. Cross over and this will take you to the car park. At the end of the car park take the left-hand path and follow the ponds round to the right until you re-join the perimeter path just before you reach the exit to the park. Turn right out of the park onto Scalegate Road, Lamb Street is the first main road on your left. Follow it to the end and cross the road back to the bus stop on Brisco Road. Because this bus stop is a circular, you can both get off here from town and get back on here to town.
