" Just 3 persons meeting at the Sands for the B walk with 3 more meeting at the start point on Armathwaite Bridge. The weather was good - mostly sunny with a very brief light shower during late morning. This walk demonstrates that you don't have to travel a long way from Carlisle to walk in some beautiful countryside with great views of both the Lake District fells and the Pennines. We started along the river before branching off to climb gently across fields to Ainstable Townhead from where we passed through the alpaca farm. The animals seemed to be on holiday apart from 2 very friendly ponies. After more climbing we followed quiet country lanes with superb views out to the west and south west and then to the AONB in the east when lunch was taken. The beautiful hamlet of Ruckcroft was admired before reaching Longdales and a collection of water fowl. From there Coomb Woods beckoned and the walk was completed in dappled shade with a final stretch along and in earshot of the river. Throughout, the wild flowers were at their best and as always the company was great."
