Despite the leader's fearsome reputation for keeping a dictatorially tight grip on his walkers, twenty brave souls set out with him on the long slog up the west side of Mousthwaite Comb on a perfect morning.  Indeed, conditions were such that a free rein was given to the athletes among us to advance at their own reckless pace, provided they waited for the more sensible of us at the 'muckle cairn' on the summit ridge.
We enjoyed glorious views – Blencathra to the west and the Eden plain to the north and east.  All that was lacking was the legendary legion of Roman troops doomed (or blessed?) to march along Souther Fell for all eternity.  A very early lunch was taken before the fearsome awkward step down towards Mungrisdale.  As it transpired, this hazard was overcome without fatality, and we all reached the road at the foot of the fell safely.  The return to Scales was accomplished without incident, other than a pause to admire a most photogenic red squirrel who posed for us quite unashamedly in a roadside tree.
Arriving  within a mile of the White Horse Inn, Ian suggested, with some trpidation, that there might be time for a 'swift half'.  The leader, possibly mellowing in old age (but don't count on it), agreed, and refreshment were enjoyed by those who wished in the sunshine in front of that establishment. Then, still in plenty of time to catch the coach at the layby down the road, we echoed Josef Locke and said ' Goodbye'.
