B Walk

Bassenthwaite Village to Dash Falls

8 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Ian Rowley

Report & Photos by Ian Rowley

There are some Sunday mornings when the alarm clock goes off and you think to yourself “do I really want to get up for a B car walk starting from Bassenthwaite village and heading for Uldale common up to Trumadoor?” Then you remember you are the walk leader…
Any way it appears the greater majority of club members had similar thoughts and so it was that four of us set off on what proved to be an excellent day of winter walking. With crisp new snow, no wind, reasonably clear skies and even some sunshine the higher fells took on an alpine aspect and welcomed us into this remote and  beautiful corner of the lakes.
After squelching our way across lower, muddy farm fields we crossed onto Uldale common and entered a winter wonderland. The only footprints we saw all day were those of a fox whose trail we followed all the way up to the mini mountain pass of Trusmadoor.
Regular scans of the skylines of the Cock Ups, Great Sca fell and Longlands Fell revealed no other humans in sight so we felt privileged to have this fantastic landscape all to ourselves including a great view from Trusmadoor of snow topped Criffell appearing to float above the Solway .
Descending back to muddy fields we finally strode back down into Bassenthwaite village after a great day rounded off by tea, coffee lemon meringue pie and lemon cheesecake (I’m not sure what the others ordered) in the excellent Crags Restaurant at Bothel.
Thanks to Alan, Pete and a special mention to Stephen who enjoyed (I think) getting to grips with the snowy conditions.
