A Walk

Place Fell

9/10 Miles Grade 1

Report & Photos by Peter Flynn

Place Fell is one of those hills which,  like Lingmell in Wasdale or Hen Comb near Crummock,  is not one of the mighty mountains that tourists travel hundreds of miles to climb,  so they can say they “bagged” it (ghastly word) or even worse – “conquered” it (you never ever conquer Gable or Scafell or Helvellyn & al.) but sits in the middle of everything and has the most stupendous views.  Today 7 of us ventured onto the ridge leading to Place Fell,  steep and occasionally rocky,  but a lovely climb.  We were rewarded with stunning views,  as the weather cleared,  of High St to the east,  Penrith and the Pennines to the north,  Glaramarra and Skiddaw north east and, eventually rising from its slumbers,  Helvellyn, the Dodds,  and Fairfield.  To the south we could just see,  over the top of the Kirkstone Pass,  a very distant view of the sea at Morecambe Bay.  We were joined for a good part of the ridge by a lady journalist who used to live in Barrow,  but now lives in Kingston on Thames and told us about work for the Times.  When we left the ridge,  we were faced with a long, fairly flat walk along the shores of the Lake and eventually came to an establishment that made excellent tea and coffee,  with a selection of cakes.  A superb walk to a rarely visited fell and  many thanks to Alan for planning and leading it.
