It’s one of those very curious facts that this walk,  as beautiful as any in the whole Lake District,  is very rarely done by the club.  10 of us set off from Gatesgarth up the very steep path that leads to the summit of Fleetwith Pike.  The day was warm (till we reached the summit) and while threatening rain,  stayed dry all day.  The views were amazing – Great and Green Gable,  Pillar,  Ennerdale,  Crummock,  Buttermere,  Loweswater,  down below.  The Scafells initially covered in cloud but eventually clear,  the Solway Firth and Criffel in the distance – the sort of day we dream about during the week,  but which rarely materialises.  No great incidents,  lunch was on the side of Grey Knotts sheltered from the wind with a further stop on the summit of Haystacks.  The day was summed up by Jenny,  while we were all soaking up the beautiful sunshine in one of the rare moments of total silence;  “this is what it’s all about!”  Thanks David – and the dogs – for planning and leading such a wonderful trip.
