We set off with high hopes, the sun shining down on a righteous band of 7 assorted ageing regulars, plus 2 younger ladies out on their second club walk and 2 new walkers, Bruce from Glasgow and Andrea from Rome (via Carlisle), a big welcome to both of them.
We were also blessed with the presence of a fairy godfather. So a nice round dozen.
As we needed an early finish in order to make the afternoon viewing of the Blencathra film at Rheged, a speedy ascent
and descent was the order of the day.
“The best laid plans” etc…… One of the girls had a very nasty blister on the back of her heel which turned red and raw not far into the walk and was unable to continue, at which point the fairy godfather kindly gave up his chance of a good scramble and spent the rest of the day ministering to her needs, delighted by the fact that his 30 year old first aid kit had at last come in useful.  Apparently they passed the time listening to Wagner on the phone, (not literally ‘cos he’s dead), taking selfies and chatting about everything under the sun.
The remaining 10 members scurried up Halls Fell without incident in under 2 hours and were looking forward to a hearty lunch on top of the mountain. A phone call from the fairy godfather confirmed that he had the walk leader’s lunch in his rucksack and was proceeding to scoff the lot, whilst downing the entire flask of tea for two, (talk about sour grapes), but she had friends on top of the mountain and ended up with a feast thanks to kind donations from all and sundry……..thank you.
We learned about a day in the life of a junior doctor and a day in the life of a seaman working on a guard ship to protect  workers on the oil rigs, followed by a year in the life of Blencathra.
All in all a mostly successful day.  Thanks to all for coming.
