Eight of us set off from New Dungeon Ghyll carpark on our Langdale ridge walk. I must say I was personally really looking forward to it, as it had been a few weeks since I’d set foot on the fells but rather apprehensive at the prospect of this being my first walk as a leader! We made it to Stickle tarn with no real difficulties as this section is well defined. As we reached the tarn the cloud covered the entire area. We waited a few minutes with the hope it would clear and sure enough it did to reveal its beauty with a stunning backdrop of Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark. From here on we were largely off track and relying on sticking to the top of the ridge heading for Silver How by topping Gt Castle How, Lt Castle How , Swinescar Pike, Lang How along the way. Cloud cover hit us again early on! Members of our group asking which way we were going and I’d point into the mist at the direction I thought we should be heading for. I had downloaded the OS map and mapped the route onto my iPhone, so at least I knew where we were all of the time despite not seeing much of it at first. Thankfully the mist cleared and we were rewarded with the amazing views surrounding Langdale. After topping Silver How we were homeward bound. A moment was spent to contemplate how we were going to reach a waterfall point and then onto a section along a fern covered path to Harry Place Farm. From here it was only a mile or so back to the car and a long awaited pit stop for a welcome refreshment!
