A Walk

Rowrah to Whitehaven

10 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Phil Howarth

Report & Photos by Peter Flynn

On which other walk,  anywhere in the Western Hemisphere,  could one have lunch in the middle of Cleator Moor without the sight of a car or motorbike?  And then to face the architectural gems of Moor Row and Whitehaven,  all the time on a broad tarmac path?  Nowhere else offers such an approach to the delights of an A walk on a beautiful Sunday in August.  5 intrepid souls set off walking at the far end of the cycle track and passing the odd dog walker or bunch of cyclists, we went down past Arlecdon, Frizington, and  Cleator Moor to our final destination – the Beacon with its outside tables where we shared the food with some extremely noisy and very bad mannered herring gulls.  The topics of conversation were widely varied;  Neil’s recent cruise,  Phil’s dietary habits,  the delights of West Cumbria’s blackberry crop and the inevitable football and rugby.  A charmingly phrased sign in the middle of the Cleator Moor section provided a new insight into the use of the English language.  (cf photos).  According to Phil’s research the path dropped 100 feet in its 9 or 10 mile length,  and we were 2¼ hours early at the Beacon – unheard of for an A group.  A very relaxing walk,  many thanks to Phil for leading it.
