Peter's Report

A small error at the start in navigation,  caused by a combination of circumstances – a map that had come apart,  bursts of heavy rain,  a faulty compass (one I found – most of the liquid had escaped and it was very unstable) and following the bearing without further checking,  until I realised we were off route and sat down and worked out precisely where we were – on a path that had swung round to right angles of the one we should have been on – and then taken a direct route across country using a different, more reliable compass that fortunately Bruce had brought along, set us back and delayed the walk quite considerably.  It was the sort of error that should not have been made,  and reinforced one fundamental principle of navigation – you cannot rush over taking precise bearings.  So apologies to all for that.  The lesson is,  if you see I am leading a walk,  arrange to pop over and see Aunty Freda and Uncle Fritz (the ones that live in Wiesbaden) that day.  However,  back to the walk.  Although it put us under a lot of pressure,  we had a lovely group,  six of us,  a beautiful walk through some of the scenery that looks so inviting from the motorway.  We obviously,  once we were on the correct path,  had to make a good pace,  and by the time we had descended from the Fairy Steps (no,  none of us saw one) we were pretty well cream-crackered. The last mile along the road was hard work,  but I can only speak for myself when I say that despite everything,  I really enjoyed the day out with good friends.  It was a wake-up call about the care needed with navigation no matter what the circumstances.  Peter
